How do I capture moments that will be worth sharing?

How do I capture moments without intruding in the research and the sailing?

How do I capture moments in a boat speeding through waves?

By using miniature, super intelligent, smooth gimbal, waterproof equipment.

Osmo Pocket uses DJI's smallest 3-axis mechanical handheld gimbal. In real time, it precisely adjusts for my movements, turning your handheld video of a golden sunset or floating plastics into a movie-like scene.

With its integrated editor, in just seconds, Osmo Pocket lets me share my findings and experiences anywhere, anytime.

How I documented the voyage

The boat

The scientific 72 ft vessel  that travels around the globe

Previously called Discovery, TravelEdge was renamed in 2019 prior to the Round the World voyages. She is a ketch used by eXXpedition, this means she is a two masted sailboat whose mainmast is taller than the mizzen mast (or aft-mast).

Sailing Vessel (S/V) TravelEdge is built as a scientific expedition boat and equipped to sail anywhere in the world in any conditions. She has sailed round the world already.

As required for eXXpedition voyages, she has a custom-built manta trawl, scientific equipment for collection of samples and data, and plenty of collaborative space on and below deck for science, crew presentations and workshops.

Let's get physical

The expectations I have had of myself for the eXXpedition mission are huge!

I wanted to be able to fully contribute to the efforts on the boat and in the community work we undertook. I did not want to be limited in any way by anything and wanted to play an active role in all parts of the trip, physically and mentally.

For this I did set myself some weight loss and fitness targets, as well as some strength targets. As I set off on the plane in November 2019, I was

  • 10 kg lighter

  • 50% stronger on the upper body

  • 30% stronger on the lower body

  • able to sustain 30 minutes of high impact cardio

I would not have been able to do this alone and have enlisted the services of personal trainer Tom Wood to help me, guide me and support me.

This level fitness has given me far more than the ability to crew ; it has given me new levels of energy, confidence and happiness.....
